Lenten Midweek Series Begins on February 17th
Lent is a 40 day liturgical season that begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Easter Sunday. Sundays are not included in the 40 day count because every Sunday is a joyful celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. Lent is considered a time of penance and discipline. Here at Pilgrim Lutheran our Lenten goal is to help our members and friends prepare themselves by having
Midweek Lenten Services, beginning with Ash Wednesday, February 17th.
This year our Lenten series is entitled God’s Love in Jesus. We’ll use the Franco Zeffirelli film Jesus of Nazareth as a “spoken Gospel” to recount the story of Jesus’ passion. Each week we’ll watch a portion of its story, as detailed below:
Feb. 17th — The Power of Love in Jesus’ return to Jerusalem: Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the cleansing of the temple, and Jesus’ preaching.
Feb. 24th — The Authority of Love in Jesus’ words and deeds: Jesus’ teach- ing in the temple, the rescue of the adulteress, the healing of the centurion’s servant and a blind man, Jesus’ condemnation of the scribes and Pharisees, and Nicodemus’ meeting with Jesus.
March 3rd — The Nourishment of Love which Jesus offers: in the Sanhedrin Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus defend Jesus but Caiaphas has other plans, Judas is disillusioned with Jesus and persuaded to help bring Jesus in for questioning, and Jesus celebrates His last Passover supper with the disciples.
March 10th — Love Rejected and Condemned: Jesus and His disciples in Gethsemane, His arrest, and Jesus taken before Caiaphas and Pontius Pilate.
March 17th — Love to the End: Jesus’ trial and death sentence, crucifixion, Jesus’ words on the cross, and His death.
March 24th — The Victory of Love: the Easter morning discovery of an empty tomb, fearful disciples hearing and responding to Mary’s report, and Jesus’ appearance to His disciples.
In addition to our regular service elements, each week we’ll give participants time to discuss some questions raised through the video with a small group and the entire assembly. This will be a special time of spiritual awareness and growth.
Join us these Wednesdays as we walk through Lent with Jesus on His journey to the cross and see God’s love for us in Jesus. Each Wednesday there will be a Lenten Soup Supper at 6:30 PM, with our service beginning at 7:30 PM. May God bless your Lenten preparations.
